B.C. Farmers’ Food Donation Income Tax Credit

Farmers: Farm to Food Bank

With the new BC Farm Credit program, you are now eligible for a 25% tax credit on all your donations of produce and meat within a year.

There are limited funds available to purchase from farmers. This supports members of our community and feeds nutritious foods to users of the Food Bank. Look for our representative at the Open Powell Rivers Farmers Market on weekends.

Letter to Powell River Farmers’ Market Vendors:

Feeding Our Community

Hello Market Vendors,

The Powell River Action Center Food Bank will have a representative at each market. Our booth will include information for farmers on the BC Farmers Food Donation Tax Credit as well as our general programming.

BC Farmers Food Donation Tax Credit?

The credit is 25 per cent of the eligible amount of a farmer’s qualifying gifts for the tax year. The credit is available to farmers or their spouses or common-law partners who make a gift of agricultural product after February 16, 2016 and before January 1, 2019.

We know that many market vendors rely on the income they make from the sales at the market. We will have a small budget to buy fresh products from vendors. The choice to donate or sell to the Food Bank is up to the vendor and you won’t be pressured if you choose not to donate.

How will this work?

Our representative will be available throughout market hours to answer questions and share information with the public. After the market has ended vendors can donate or sell their products to the Food Bank. We ask that you wait until the market has ended in order to give the public the first opportunity to support your booth.

What products is the Food Bank interested in?

The Food Bank is interested in fresh or frozen vegetable’s, fruit and meat. As well as eggs and bread. The Food Bank is not able to accept or purchase donations of home canned food. If you bring commercially canned goods for donation to the food bank we ask that you check the expiry date to ensure it hasn’t expired within six months.
