What is a “household”?

A “household” is a term we use to describe one or more people living together that share income and expenses. It could be:

  • a single person
  • a couple living together or married
  • parents living with their children under 18
  • adults living with adult dependents

People that live at the same address without sharing income are considered separate households, as are adults living with their non-dependent parents.

What do I need bring when I come in to get food?

Government issued photo ID is necessary for adults. Care cards are acceptable for children.

Bring a strong bag if you are walking or taking the bus.

Do I  need to bring the whole family to get food for all of us?

No, only one adult per household needs to come. Please have IDs for all household members to get the full amount of food available to your family.

What if I don’t have an address?

We will still give you a hamper, however you do need ID.

I lost my ID…

Social Services can give you a form that will work for us.

Where else in Powell River can I get free food and meals?

There are several sources. Download this PDF for the list (also local housing information).

I am vegan/diabetic/have special dietary needs?

Just ask … we will help you find replacements for the foods you cannot eat. Vegetarian hampers are prepacked and ready to go.

What about gluten-free?

We have lots of regular gluten free food. When we make up a gluten-free hamper, we leave out the usual wheat containing foods like pasta and cream soups, and include more rice and beans. Occasionally we will have specialty products that have been donated such as baking mix, snacks, etc;  we usually give these to families with children that have celiac disease.

You are welcome to ask for replacements for items in your hamper that you won’t eat.

Where does the fresh produce come from?

Most of the fresh produce is donated by local farms. Farms as a business can receive a tax credit from their food donations. Learn more about that on this page

Can I donate fresh produce?

Yes! We are very happy to receive fresh food for distribution. You don’t have to be a farmer to donate. Fruit, veges and meat are all very appreciated.

What else can I donate?

  • Canned & packaged foods (please check the expiry date!)
  • Cash/cheques
  • Donations using a credit card can be made with Paypal on our Donations page
